How the New England Patriots Filled Their Biggest Need

The New England Patriots crushed the NFL Draft and filled their biggest hole. They are now ready to head back to the Super Bowl

This nfl team absolutely obliterated expectations last year. They went on a tear and rattled off an explosive season full of highlight reel plays and impressive wins. And in this past offseason they’ve added a piece that makes them even more dangerous. And the reality is it doesn’t just make them lethal for this upcoming season but for the next decade. This team is the New England patriots and that acquisition is Caleb Lomu.

Listen, the Patriots offense last year was absolutely killer. And the way they ripped apart defenses with subpar talent was what was the most impressive. Stefon Diggs is a couple years removed from his superstar prime. They had an aging veteran tight end room in Hunter Henry and Austin Hooper. Sure, they found a lot of success in the run game, but no one is arguing that the Patriots running back room is top in the league.

But that didn’t matter…. Because Drake Maye was an absolute star. He lost the mvp award by one singular vote, and there’s a very valid argument that he was robbed from achieving this incredibly accomplishment. He carried the offense from bottom 5 in the league to top 5, and he didn’t make too many mistakes. That is until the playoffs.

The patriots had to face probably the most difficult path of defenses ever in a single postseason run. It started with Jim Harbaugh’s stout chargers defense that aggressively gets to the passer and hits you hard across the middle of the field. The chargers had 5 sacks in that game alone, and while the patriots had a league average offensive line through the season, it looks breakable. Will Campbell was coming off a major injury and there was no stopping the chargers defensive line. It looked like a major weak point.

Then came the historic Houston Texan defense, which also sacked Maye 5 times in that game alone. Maye through an interception and fumbled 4 times, losing 2 to the Texans defense, and yet somehow found enough winning plays to score 21 offensive points, including 3 passing touchdowns which was enough to carry them to the afc championship game.

Enter the Denver broncos in the mile high stadium. Another elite defense, and the broncos sacked Maye 5 times, and while Maye didn’t have his most elite game, he didn’t make the critical error. But the offensive line looked terribly porous.

As the Patriots prepared for the Super Bowl, they knew asking their inexperienced offensive line to defend the Seahawks deeply talented defensive was a tall task. In the 60 minutes that us Patriots fans would love to forget, the Seahawks sacked Maye 6 times and forced a fumble on him as well. The patriots ultimately failed to bring home the Lombardi and a lot of the blame could be placed on the offensive line. Rookies Will Campbell and Jared Wilson looked like turnstiles in the airport, and no matter where Maye turned, there was a Seahawk in his face.

So the patriots decided to make a move. They went aggressive in the offseason. They wanted to secure the offensive line for years to come. And they smashed that goal. Their first move was to determine the right side of the line. Morgan Moses would bring back his savy veteran presence to help anchor the right side next to Big Mike Onwenu who is a very talented right guard. The patriots would let Garrett Bradbury walk and slide Jared Wilson to center to play his more natural position.

But that left 2 question marks on the left side of the offensive line. Would Will Campbell step up and be the franchise left tackle? Or would he be best suited to slide in to left guard due to his shorter arms and slightly limited ability to anchor in the passing game?

They answered the question with a resounding Yes, and possible yes! The patriots made the ultimate move, and signed interior lineman, Alijah Vera Tucker to a big 3 year, $42 million dollar deal. A deal that screams above average starter and when he’s on the field, he fits that definition. He is widely regarded as an above average staple of a guard that can dominate in the run game and stabilize the pass game. Tucker has not been able to consistently get in the field after multiple significant injuries. He has had 2 separate tricep tears and a torn Achilles which has caused him to miss a ton of games.

But when he’s on the field he’s a true difference maker. And this move locked up the left guard position. He achieved a career-high 77.7 PFF grade in 2024, ranking 10th among guards. This was the last full season that he played, as he missed significant time the next season. Alijah Vera Tucker provides extremely high upside, the kind of upside that is rare to find in free agency.

It looked like the interior offensive line was set, until they decided to shock the entire football world. Staring down the center barrel of a Vera-Tucker, Wilson, Onwenu middle line looks pretty dang good, Onwenu is a top 10 RG, Wilson was the number 1 rated center prospect in the 2025 NFL Draft, and Vera-Tucker (when healthy is an incredibly talented guard). But they didn’t stop with just signing Alijah Vera-Tucker.

Then came the 2026 NFL Draft and the Patriots did what a lot of great organizations do – they recognized a player they wanted fell into a range they felt comfortable going up to get, and they went and got their guy.

The Patriots had pick number 31, after losing the Super Bowl. But, pick 28 came up on the clock with the Buffalo Bills choosing their player they wanted to draft.

The Patriots offered a trade – pick 125 and pick 31 for pick 28. The Bills agreed and the Patriots had officially leapfrogged both the 49ers and the Chiefs. Both of these teams could’ve been in play for an offensive lineman, and the last true first round tackle still on the board. Utah’s offensive anchor, Caleb Lomu.

Many thought the Patriots would take a receiver, some thought we’d take a linebacker or a safety. But, they did exactly what I wanted them to do. GO ALL IN ON PROTECTING DRAKE MAYE.

Enter Caleb Lomu. At 6’6, 313 pounds, with longer arms and a very athletic profile, Lomu entered the draft as a surefire first round pick. He tested incredibly well at the combine with a sub 5 second 40 yard dash, an amazing 10 yard split, a vertical of elite tackles at 32.50 inches, and a broad jump that literally leaped off the metric page. Lomu recorded an elite RAS of roughly 9.77 to 9.89 out of 10.00, according to MathBomb and Patriots.com. This score ranks him among the top 20 offensive tackles tested from 1987 to 2026

But his profile isn’t just impressive, his statistics back it up. He started 12 games at left tackle for Utah and allowed zero sacks. This earned him First Team All-Big 12 Honors.

If you removed his combine and his statistics, his film backs it up. He has elite footwork, mirror quickness, and balance on the edge. He is still developing as a run blocker but seems like he was taylor-made to protect Drake Maye’s blindside…………….. Which complicates the situation.

Because only a year ago, the Patriots drafted Will Campbell - All SEC left tackle out of LSU with the 4th overall pick! A guy who was heavily criticized for having less than ideal length arms for an NFL tackle. Campbell was elite in college, and even though injuries sort of derailed his playoff abilities, he was having a very solid rookie year. Some NFL experts think his arm length will limit him to being a LG, but having pro bowl caliber skills and traits to be an above average guard. Think Quentin Nelson. But now, with Vera-Tucker, Will Campbell may find himself as the odd man out. WHICH IS ALSO PROBABLY INCORRECT.

The reality which is staring us right in the face is that Morgan Moses is a solid reliable right tackle. But he is also 35 years old, which means he may be nearing his end. Moses finished the 2025 season with a 69.8 pass-blocking grade, and a strong 77.1 run blocking grade, per PFF. He was ranked 27th out of all 89 eligible tackles. Not a game changer, but a guy you love protecting Maye’s right side enough that you don’t think twice about replacing him. But, he may retire sooner than we think.

So in reality, with Will Campbell’s ability to destroy in the run game and get up field quick, and his shorter than desire arms, may mean he is destined for the right tackle position. Caleb Lomu offers incredibly high upside at left tackle, which is especially important in the pass game, when you don’t want Maye to get blindly leveled.

The Patriots didn’t accidentally complicate this offensive line. They didn’t accidentally bring up doubt in Will Campbell. They secured the future Drake Maye protection unit. They secured the necessary beef they need to complete with the upper echelon defensive line units – like the Texans, Broncos, Cowboys, Seahawks, Chargers, etc.

Caleb Lomu may start the season as the swing - break glass in case of emergency - tackle, but he will be a staple in this line moving forward, most likely at left tackle. Which pushes Will Campbell to left guard or right tackle. With Vera-Tucker signed to a long term deal, that pushes Campbell to right tackle most likely.

So while the Patriots offensive line will most likely open with Campbell - Vera-Tucker - Wilson - Onwenu - Moses. I could easily see next year being Lomu - Vera Tucker - Wilson - Onwenu - Campbell.

Long story short, the Patriots have guys that can protect Maye. 2 more than they had last year. Both guys with insane upside and team control for the next 3-5 years. Guys that I actually believe in. And some draft scouts will tell you this was a B or C rated draft pick. Those scouts would be wrong.

The recipe is simple - keep Maye upright with his eye’s downfield, and he’ll do the rest.
