49ers Next Wide Receiver
With the NFL trade deadline coming up in just a few weeks on November 10th, the 49ers are in a unique position. They currently sit atop the NFC with the Vikings, each with 5-0 records. You would think a team that is 5-0 has no weaknesses, but that doesn’t hold true for the Niners.
Mike Evans has been one of the best offseason signings by any team this offseason. Through just 5 games, he has 24 receptions, 326 yards, and 3 touchdowns. Not to mention the rib injury he has been fighting through since week 3. However, Evans has just missed practice due to an Achilles injury on Thursday, which is all bad. I was confident Mike Evans could stay healthy enough this season, but if the Niners decide for force him back too early from whatever this Achilles injury might be, it could be season ending. And another injured wide receiver would be the detrimental to their offense.
Let’s look at a potential trade candidate for the Niners to target to help bolster their receiver room in the event of another injury.
The Washington Commanders have expressed interest in the past with 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, but the trade never came through. Brandon Aiyuk was dealing with major off the field issues and that led to the Commanders backing off. The most likely scenario was for the 49ers to release Aiyuk, then the Commanders would sign Aiyuk on a cheap contract and both sides would be happy. However, that didn’t happen. John Lynch and the 49ers didn’t want to give Brandon Aiyuk the satisfaction of playing football this season, and out of pettiness they have kept him on the roster this season.
That being said, what about now? All the Brandon Aiyuk drama was back in the Summer, and the 49ers are now in need of a some depth at the receiver position. The Commanders just so happen to have Terry McLaurin who would be the perfect target for the 49ers. McLaurin is coming off an injured 2025 campaign, only playing 10 games and almost getting to the 600 yd mark. The Commanders who hold a 1-3 record, could potentially look to sell at the deadline and get some draft capital in exchange for McLaurin while he still holds some value.
Who says no to a Brandon Aiyuk, Terry McLaurin swap? The Commanders get some draft capital along with a replacement for Scary Terry in Brandon Aiyuk. And the Niners get their staple wide receiver alongside Mike Evans while also clearing themselves of the Brandon Aiyuk situation. Why not?
I could see the Commanders not really wanting Brandon Aiyuk at this point, but if they want to sell on McLaurin, now is probably the time. The real question is the draft capital. Are the Niners willing to part with a 3rd or 4th rounder in exchange for Mclaurin. I’m not so sure, at some point this season they hope to get De’Zhaun Stribling back, in addition to Christian Kirk who might play this Monday. Maybe they won’t trade for a receiver at all?
Just to be clear, I am in no way saying that this could or should happen. Mostly just bringing up an option that I haven’t seen anywhere else. McLaurin has been brought up as a trade target for the Niners, but nobody has connected the pieces of Brandon Aiyuk into the equation yet. I also think the Niners would love to rid themselves of Aiyuk the week after beating down the Commanders on Monday Night Football, just to rub it in Aiyuk’s face. Let me know what you guys think.
